Alara launches its medical imaging gateway-as-a-service as an AWS Partner in conjunction with the launch of Amazon HealthLake Imaging to provide secure, performant, bi-directional data flow between healthcare systems and the cloud

San Francisco, CA, November 15, 2022 – Alara Imaging today announced the launch of Alara’s medical imaging gateway-as-a-service as an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Partner in conjunction with the launch of Amazon HealthLake Imaging. Alara’s Gateway securely delivers radiology data real-time to and from Amazon HealthLake Imaging, a new HIPAA-eligible capability now available in preview, which allows customers to easily store, share, and analyze medical images in the cloud at petabyte scale.

“Alara’s Gateway overcomes a significant barrier to medical imaging innovation by ushering in a cloud-native, modern framework to an antiquated technology stack,” said Nate Mazonson, CEO and co-founder of Alara Imaging. “We are proud to work with AWS on solutions that aim to advance patient care.”

Alara’s Gateway helps health systems and technology companies use Amazon HealthLake Imaging in a live clinical environment by acting as the local node for bi-directional image and data flows between the site and AWS. Alara’s Gateway utilizes internet-of-things (IoT) technologies to intake, modify, and upload a healthcare site’s Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images into Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), and then ingest them into Amazon HealthLake Imaging.

"UCSF believes Alara’s Gateway will serve as the foundation for a new wave of medical imaging innovation through the acceleration of research-based knowledge, the development of digital tools to support clinical decision making, and the measurement of quality and efficiency to drive improvements in care. UCSF is a proud partner of Alara Imaging,” said Anthony Francis, Executive Director of the UCSF Office of Technology Management.

“Amazon HealthLake Imaging provides sub-second image retrieval in workflows that are highly available and securely accessible from anywhere. Additionally, Amazon HealthLake Imaging has the ability to drive medical viewers and analysis applications from a single encrypted copy of data,” said Chris Hafey, Principal Product Manager at AWS. “We are proud to work with Alara Imaging to accelerate adoption of cloud-native solutions that provide a pathway to transitioning enterprise workflows to the cloud.”

Medical imaging technology companies and healthcare systems leverage Alara’s Gateway to:

  • Accelerate healthcare system security reviews
  • Outsource medical imaging data delivery to a cloud environment, so they can refocus on their core competency
  • Build cloud-native solutions using purpose-built, edge-to-cloud infrastructure
